EMOTIONS, AGENCY AND ACTIVISM – BUILDING GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP IN A WORLD OF CHALLENGES AND POSSIBILITIES
Consensus-workshop that is organized 31st of March at 12:00 pm (UTC+2) till 4 pm in Zoom.
In this workshop researchers, educators, activists and other experts, discuss the concepts of sustainable development, empathy and justice in the context of current research, activism and global citizenship education.
The seminar is lightly based on consensus conference method, in which research and experience-based knowledge and building common understanding are in focus. All participants will receive a short preview material before the workshop. The workshop examines global responsibility and global citizenship through the ‘glasses’ of global education and activism, while considering the importance of compassion, emotional education and agency in growing global responsibility. Please note, that this is a participatory event based on shared knowledge and joint discussion. We hope you can join with us for the whole afternoon (and participate also in the group discussions).

Session 1: Arts, emotions and agency 12.15-13.15
Raisa Foster: Irrational, Useless, and Unworthy – Contemporary Art as (Un)Doing in the Era of Ecosocial Crisis.
Dr. Raisa Foster works as a university researcher in the Department of Social Sciences at the University of Eastern Finland. She is an associate professor of social pedagogy, especially of artistic research and practice (University of Eastern Finland), and an associate professor of dance pedagogy at the University of the Arts Helsinki.
Annukka Toivonen: Global education with drama methods – How to redirect emotions as a positive force for change?
Annukka Toivonen works as a specialist in global education at the Peace Union of Finland. She is responsible for the Peace School programme that applies drama methods and storytelling in global education. Annukka has extensive experience in educating with participatory drama methods, developing teaching materials for global education, planning and coordinating global education projects, and executing global education trainings. She holds MA in Community Pedagogy.

Antti Rajala: Pedagogy of concrete utopias: Promoting youth civic engagement and climate activism in formal education
Antti Rajala works as Academy fo Finland Post-Doctoral research in University of Oulu. Rajala has conducted video-based research in schools and science centers on the topics of global education, educational change, and agency in education. Currently, he leads the project Pedagogy of concrete utopias: Fostering youth agency and climate activism in formal education.
Katri Jurvakainen: Creating an ecosocially sustainable society as a conscious aim of education
Katri Jurvakainen is a project coordinator in KESTO project that researches and develops ethical sustainability skills among university students, teachers and business actors. Her main research interests are educational philosophy and theory, especially in the context of climate education.

Kristiina Brunila: WHY EDUCATION HURTS: From Romantic Fantasy to Misery and then what?
Professor Kristiina Brunila works in the international research centre of AGORA for the study of social justice and equality in education, University of Helsinki. With her research group she has studied complex ambivalences of education and inequalities, changing education governance, marketisation, privatisation, return of behaviorism, power relations and agency and published widely, in academic forums and beyond.
Alice Jäske: How to become an activist? My story of becoming an anti-racism expert.
Alice Jäske is a Master of Education, anti-racism expert, activist and journalist. She has co-founded the Students of Colour student organisation and Mixed Finns, a community for mixed-race Finns. She also wrote her master thesis on the white-normative nature of the Finnish education system and was named Adult Educator of the Year in 2021.
